So MANY storage units

Did you know there are more than 50,000 storage facilities in the US? That’s 5 times more than the number of Starbucks and we all know there’s one of those on practically every corner. While that may sound like a lot, notice just how many you pass as you drive around. Personally, I can think of three in my area alone.

Did you know that 25% of people with a 2-car garage can’t park inside it? That’s because when someone doesn’t what something inside their house, it gets thrown into the garage until they figure it out…if they figure it out.

Where does all the STUFF come from?

It is always so interesting to me as to how much stuff we acquire and how it adds up so quickly. You know what they say…the only constant is change and our lives can often change in a moment’s notice. Often that change can bring more stuff into our homes. Perhaps a family member passed away or maybe an adult child moves back home, or a senior parent comes to live with their children.

Not to mention, having a baby brings with it a home full of stuff. While the baby may only be the tiniest of things, they come with rooms full of items. Whatever the situation, it is safe to say that a life change can very easily add to an already overcrowded home of stuff. And just like that, your once-spacious abode is bursting at the seams.

Pray tell…what’s the solution

Enter the storage unit: the hero, or perhaps the villain, of this story. Because of all the stuff, when people get to the point where they feel they are bursting at the seams they feel the only solution is to rent a storage unit/s. The intention is that it would be a temporary solution.

As month after month passes and eventually turns into a year or years, that storage unit starts to feel less like a pit stop into a black hole of perpetual storage. Over time the contents can very easily become out of sight and out of mind. Before you know it, you’re knee-deep in monthly rental fees, wondering how on earth you ended up with so much stuff in the first place.

How MUCH is this costing?

Speaking of cost have you ever calculated how much money you have spent on your storage unit/s over time? Just for fun try calculating it. Brace yourself for a reality check that could be sharper than your kitchen knives.

It is usually much more than the value of what you are storing. It’s not just taking up space in your home, it’s draining your bank account…fast! Hopefully, once you see that number it will be a wake-up call and you will realize that it’s not worth storing that stuff any longer.

Conclusion

Storage units may seem like the perfect solution. But just like everything in life, it comes at a price…literally. So, the next time you’re tempted to shove your stuff into storage even if you think it’s temporary, think about this: is it really worth it?
