Year after year getting organized is on the list of the top ten goals for people. While it may be easy for some, it remains daunting for others. One thing that I always say to my clients is that in order to get and stay organized your things have to have a home.

One way to get them organized is to containerize them. What I mean is that you must house them in some sort of container. It could be a storage bin, a shoe box, a jar, an old medicine bottle…the possibilities are endless. What’s important is that they are in something. The reason for this is so that you can keep like items together and prevent them from getting separated and lost in the cabinet or shelf. If your medicines are in one bin, then you will be able to find them when you need them. If the sewing supplies are all in one box, you can find them when needed. And so on and so on. The point is containerizing keeps like items together as well as neat and tidy.

There are other benefits as well. If things have a home and are returned to their home, other family members can find the items as well which means there is less fighting and arguing. Being able to find things easier reducing stress levels. Not to mention that containerize makes things look more esthetically pleasing. It gives a feeling of calm instead of angst when you look in the shelf/cabinet.

The bottom line is, one of the fundamental rules of successful and sustainable organization is to containerize.
